Beginner Capsule Wardrobe: Tops

June 11, 2018 3 Comments

I’m calling this a beginner capsule wardrobe because I am a beginner to this task! Today, we are focusing on tops: shirts & blouses! I’m very excited and curious as to how creating this capsule wardrobe is going to affect my mood, life, and attitude. I’m not an overshopper and I don’t buy everything I want, but I do love to shop. Since beginning to declutter my closet, I wear (almost) everything I own on a regular basis now, and I really love every piece that’s in my wardrobe! I’m curious to find out if I will get the same feeling walking into my closet every morning that I do when I go shopping. Knowing that I already love all of these pieces and feel good wearing them could initiate the same response when I buy a new outfit. I’m a beginner in that I’m not a minimalist, but I really value the concept of minimalism. I’m not aiming to be a minimalist exactly, but I am trying to uncover what it would be like if I really only owned only what I wear on a regular basis.

If you’re like me and you’re not a minimalist, but you really want to try out a capsule wardrobe, I’d love for you to join me on this journey!

PURPOSE: My purpose is to live with less clothing, keeping only the pieces that I know I will wear and make me feel good. I want to establish a wardrobe that does not exceed my needs, as well as allows me to stay true to my overall style. My purpose is not to have a neutral colored wardrobe. Although I wear white and black the most frequently, I love throwing in a bright pink top or pink striped shorts for spring & summer. As long as the colorful pieces can still be mixed and matched with the rest of your wardrobe, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with throwing some color in there!

HYPOTHESIS/HOPEFUL OUTCOME: Living with less pieces in my closet will not only speed up my morning routine, but will also allow me to feel confident, happy, content, and stylish living with all that I need, not all that I want.

STEP 1: Remove All Clothes From Your Closet: I know not everyone does this, and it’s totally fine if you choose to just remove the pieces you know you don’t wear often or you’re not sure you want to keep. I chose to remove all the pieces so that I could more easily try them on.

STEP 2: Separate Into Piles: Keep | Maybe | Give Away: As expected, I wound up with a very large “maybe” pile (ha! Beginner, remember 😉 ).

STEP 3: Try On Clothes : Try on any items you aren’t completely sure you want to keep or give away. How does the item make you feel? Can you only wear it on a “good body day”? How often have you worn it in the past 6 months? 12 months? Are there other pieces you can mix and match it with?

STEP 4: Live With Your Adjusted Closet: Give yourself 7 – 10 days consistently to live with your newly decluttered closet. Were there any items you initially took out of your closet that you ended up reaching for? Were there any items you forgot about when they were out of sight?

STEP 5: Examine Your Needs vs. Wants: What do you not have in your closet that you need? What do you not have that you want? Are your needs for work, school, everyday life met? Your wants for the sake of style? To be honest, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with owning a few articles of clothing you want, not need. Again, you’re probably thinking that goes against a capsule wardrobe. But again, I will tell you that this is a beginner series, and our focus is on establishing the difference between want & need, and learning how to differentiate the two when shopping or decluttering our closets. (Plus, I’m part-fashion blogger, so I can’t totally give up shopping!).

Final Thoughts:
You might be thinking, “This is not a capsule wardrobe!”. And you’re right! That’s why I’m calling myself a ‘beginner’. I’m new at this and I don’t want to push myself too much. When I tried this before, I gave away clothes that I actually needed. This time around, I’m being smart about my decisions and taking it slow. Plus, everyone’s capsule wardrobe looks different! So I may have more clothes than the average capsule wardrobe individual, but that’s okay. I’m taking my time and learning! My intention is to only own clothes that I actually wear, and not buy things just for the sake of a sale, or for how I wish I looked. If you have any suggestions or want to join me in this journey, please let me know in the comments below! I’d love to start a conversation about creating a capsule wardrobe! Below I’ve listed all the shirts & blouses I’ve chosen to keep for now, as well as highlighting those pieces I wear on a regular basis (red). Any items bolded are newer pieces I still want to give a chance. I hope the first part of this beginner capsule wardrobe series has been helpful to you!

Thanks, girl! I’m keeping some of my “maybe’s” because I’m not 100% sure I want to give them away, and then rest I’m donating!

Wow!! I’m feeling a bit greedy and embarrassed by my very “overstocked” wardrobe.
You have given me an incentive to get started downsizing my wardrobe(if I can find a space large enough to place my piles)!!

    Really good blogs, my favorite!!
