What To Do In Madrid, New Mexico

June 20, 2018 4 Comments

Over Mother’s Day weekend, my parents, husband, & I traveled an hour outside of Albuquerque to the eclectic town of Madrid, New Mexico. Madrid was a mining town until around 1950’s, when most of the mines closed and Madrid became a ghost town for the next 20 years. We enjoyed walking around the small town, taking our time exploring each shop & trying the wonderful restaurants! If you’re thinking of visiting Madrid, I definitely recommend coming in around lunch time, grabbing a bite to eat, and taking the rest of the afternoon to explore the different shops along main street! Today I’ve comprised a list of most of the shops worth stopping in to! If you missed my post on where to eat in Madrid, NM, you can check that out here!

1. Get Your Picture Made At The Photo Park

Located near most parking areas, the photo park runs solely off of donations & offers a large selection of fun photo boards to choose from.

2. Grab A Wild Hog’s Souvenir at Maggie’s Diner

Contrary to popular belief (and name), Maggie’s Diner is actually not a diner. It’s been converted into a t-shirt and gift shop, and definitely worth stopping in! There’s a multitude of Wild Hogs memorabilia to choose from, but also a lot of unique Madrid gifts and souvenirs.

3. Browse Art Pieces & Grab A Soda at Jezebel Studio & Gallery | Soda Fountain & Café

Connected to an art gallery, this cute little store offers a lot of gift options, as well as unique sodas and coffees to drink.

4. Explore The Haunted Mine Shaft Museum

Madrid is said to have ghosts still haunting the grounds. The museum is a bit creepy, even without knowing that information. But I definitely recommend checking it out. A lot of old mining equipment still remains, as well as stories dedicated to how the town got started, and how it became what it is today. If you’re a history buff, you’ll really want to check this out!

5. Find Authentic Pottery to Bring Home at The Trading Bird

You can easily spot this cute little shop by the blue Chevrolet out front. On our first visit, we brought home a gorgeous piece of pottery.

6. Find Breathtaking Pottery at Conley Studio Pottery

Offering a variety of glass pottery, hand crafted/clay plates, as well as beautiful art decor pieces, this is a spot you don’t want to miss! Each time we go to Madrid, we have to stop into this shop! Last time we visited, we brought a home a beautiful glass-blown bowl.

7. Check Out (Authentic) Navajo Rugs at Textiles

Daniel and I stopped in here on our first visit to Madrid. From what Daniel could tell, the Navajo rugs were authentic, so be prepared to pay a higher price. Authentic Navajo rugs, jewelry, and blankets will always be at a well-deserved higher price than non-authentic pieces.

8. Enjoy the Recycled Home Decor & Gifts at Weasel and Fitz

Everything sold in this shop is made out of recycled materials. We brought home the cutest little birdhouse made out of recycled metal pieces.

9. Find Gorgeous Jewelry at Gypsy Gem

A lot of the shops in Madrid sell turquoise jewelry. Definitely recommend stopping into this shop if you’re in the market for turquoise.

Beyond Madrid

Visit Eaves Movie Ranch

15 minutes down the road, you can find a film set! According to IMDb, the last film to be made at Eaves Movie Ranch was in 2016, but the buildings still remain. I definitely recommend stopping by if you’re interested in western films, or even films in general! The set is gated off, so please do not trespass. I walked up to the gate to take a few photographs and was able to see the set perfectly fine. Here’s a list of just a few of the movies that have been filmed there:

The Magnificent Seven (2016)
Lonesome Dove (1989)
Easy Rider (1969)
Silverado (1985)
Billy Jack (1971)

Continue On To Santa Fe

If you continue on the road from Albuquerque to Madrid, you’ll eventually find yourself in Santa Fe. If you’re visiting New Mexico, I definitely recommend taking this route, as it allows you to see multiple (and fun) sites in one day! I’m hoping to have a post on Santa Fe sooner than later!

I hope you found this post helpful! As always, if you have any comments, questions, or suggestions, please leave them in the comments below!
