January 2020 House Update: Backyard Renovation

January 23, 2020 No Comments

Today I’m sharing all about our backyard renovation!

Why we renovated: Last year, we renovated a large portion of the interior of our house. This year, we are focusing heavily on the exterior; specifically, our backyard! As you can see from the photos below, our backyard was mainly concrete and gravel. While very New Mexico-esque, it wasn’t realistic for our family. We don’t need as large of a concrete section as the backyard had, and we also wanted to put in grass for our dog to run around. While our backyard felt small, we knew that if we removed all of the unnecessary things like gravel, concrete, and dead shrubbery, our backyard could potentially double in size! It’s all about utilizing the space you have!

“‘All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever.’” 1 Peter 1:24 (Isaiah 40:6-8)

Step By Step:

October 3, 2019

Wet met with Gary Milligan of Milligan Landscapes to discuss our options. We told him what we were hoping for in a backyard, and he went to work working on a visualization for us! In our second meeting two weeks later, Gary showed us the blueprints he had created. They were better than we had imagined! We okayed the details and scheduled our start date!

January 6, 2020 // Day 1

On the first day of renovation, the team removed all unwanted shrubbery and 95% of the gravel. They were efficient, kind, and very hardworking.

January 7, 2020 // Day 2

On day two, the team was able to jackhammer and remove all of the unnecessary concrete. We couldn’t believe how fast and efficient they were working!

January 8, 2020 // Day 3

The team worked on leveling the ground. They quickly realized that our pine tree had not been planted properly, and would create a slope if we were to run grass all the way to the trunk. Gary told us we could put a retaining wall around the trunk that the grass could run up to, therefore keeping the look of the ground level up until the retaining wall.

January 9, 2020 // Day 4

The retaining wall was built and turned out even better than we had hoped for! We are so thankful Gary had this idea; it cozies up the yard even more! The team continued structuring the fire pit seating area and border.

January 10, 2020 // Day 5

On the fifth day of renovation, we woke up to snow. A team member had come by early in the morning to check on how much snow had fallen. With so much snow on the ground, day five of the renovation had to be postponed to Monday.

January 13, 2020 // Day 6

The team got started bright and early the following Monday. We had a bit of a hassle with our water situation: We thought we had turned our valve off completely, but we hadn’t. Once we finally got it fixed, the team was able to continue forward with the renovation.

January 14, 2020 // Day 7

On day seven, the crew dug trenches that would connect the sprinkler system to the trees that were to be planted. They also began building the firepit. A hole in one of our pipes was discovered and determined to be from old age (our house is only 16 years old, but we’re the first owners to do any renovations. After a certain amount of time, homes start needing updates and upkeep. It’s been a huge learning experience and a lot of fun renovating & updating our home!) The crew prepared to replace the valve the following day.

January 15, 2020 // Day 8

After figuring out the valve had a hole, the team also determined that water was constantly running through it and another piece would need to be replaced. As unfortunate as that is, Daniel and I were very thankful that they not only told us, but fixed it, as well. We’ve had situations with renovators in the past who just covered up issues instead of fixing them. The crew also sawed large slabs of concrete for the seating area around our firepit.

January 16, 2020 // Day 9

The team added more dirt to better level the ground. They planted the trees and flowers and worked diligently while it started snowing.

January 17, 2020 // Day 10

Since we got so much snow the previous night, the team wasn’t able to work on this day.

January 20, 2020 // Day 11

The crew laid the sod down, as well as prepared to put the gravel around the tree and plants the next day. We also decided to move one of the four trees, since it would eventually grow into our pine tree as time goes on.

January 21, 2020 // Day 12
(The Final Result!)

On the final day, the crew placed the gravel around our pine tree and new plants! We are beyond thrilled with the final results! It exceeded our expectations and we can’t wait to start being able to use the yard as the sod begins to set! The grass will turn green in the spring, and I will definitely be posting pictures with an update!
